There is a dictionary app on my iPhone and every day, a new word. Some are pretty easy but some of them are so unusual that they stop me in my tracks. Yesterday, the word was paranymph. On hearing the definition, I was astounded to think that I had not heard it before… the simple definition is “A groomsman or a bridesmaid.”!
I can think of many interesting couples who would have loved calling their people paranymphs… it has a forest spirit, steampunk thing about it that would be perfect here in the wilds of the Great Pacific Northwest. These particular paranymphs were having a grand laugh during the group photos at Abigail’s Garden and, considering that the wedding had a Harry Potter theme running through it, they should have known about this word.
Paranymph can be traced to the Greek paránymphos meaning literally “person beside the bride.” It entered English in the mid-1500s.
Maybe we can revive the word and run with it? There might be ancient authors smiling somewhere in the mists. ;0)
It’s great when people are relaxed and having fun during the wedding day… it makes my job much easier.
Let’s make pictures that make you happy!
In the mirror is a familiar face… the bluejeans are crumpled in the corner and you are feeling the slight edge of the veil on your bare shoulders. It’s been a long time in the planning mode but here you are… dressed and polished to a high point you don’t quite recognize. And, yet, it’s you all along. Familiar is about to change for you and your other half in so many ways… it will take some time but you will see the differences as the years go by. The two of you become more of a team than you ever thought possible… if you are lucky, it only gets better. Old, comfortable familiar becomes new and better familiar and life goes on.
Today, though, is the day to look in the mirror, before the ceremony and all of the people descend on you and see just who you are about to become. It can be quite magical. ;0)
Lauren married Dustin on a warm September evening in Abigail’s Garden at Oregon City’s Abernethy Center. Geranium Lake Flowers staged a fantasy night flavored with Harry Potter references and the night went on for many lovely hours. What I know is that the planning paid off and these two are off on their new journey… new worlds are ahead.
There is always that moment when your new rings become a reality… an actual weight on your finger that wasn’t there before. (I remember very clearly how I seemed to swing mine into everything for the first week or so.) Leanne and PJ have a little more time before the weight will become a part of them… no longer waiting for the day in tiny, shiny black boxes. ;0)
They got married on a sunny Saturday about a week ago in the lovely Abigail’s Garden at the Abernethy Center and they did it with grace and style. Their team of vendors was a real treat and it made the day that much better. Molli and Jennifer of Soiree ran the show while Crystal Lillies created a lovely garden in a garden. Eric Wright, Portland’s best DJ, had everyone on the dance floor as usual and Eric Newland of Hybrid Moon captured everything on video. It was great and I was the lucky photographer! ;0)
