Anticipation Rules the Day

Anticipation is a mix of so many things. Nerves, certainly, but also joy, a little bit of slo-mo and some butterflies in your belly. I can feel it from where I stand. The bride is staying out of sight as the others are watching the guests arrive, their conversation light and intimate.

It’s a dusty August day at Camp Colton, a place of many tall trees… birds and chipmunks live there. This little space is set aside from the main event cabin, a quiet place for the women to get ready. I’m standing in the back of the room watching the light play on all of the parts of the scene, knowing it will be a moment maybe forgotten later. There are lots of big parts in a wedding day but it’s the little bits that enrich the history. I push the shutter button quietly so as not to break the spell.

I’m never sure if the players are aware of what’s ahead on a day like this. The general format is similar but each one has it’s own special arc of emotions. The entire crowd will play their parts and her own butterflies will calm as the daylight fades into the party. For now, walking through that sunlit door, she is about to join him in an entirely new journey. Sure, it starts with a wedding but a marriage is what is being born here.

A Cake Safari on a Hot Day

It was such a hot day, the cake was hiding in the basement of the Overlook House. Just before dinner, the newlyweds got curious about their cake. I overheard them asking the caterer if they could go see it. I followed them down the narrow stairs and watched them Ooh and Ahhh… anticipation on their smiling faces. As we turned to leave, I noticed two kiddie chairs in the corner. I asked them how they felt about having a picture in this oddly compelling space, figuring that if they hated it, they’d say so. They both lit up and the yes was very enthusiastic so I asked him to put the chairs in front of the wall.
Two minutes later, we went up to a wonderful meal knowing that a great cake was waiting in the wings.

Weddings can be planned to a high level but the best weddings roll with the punches. The summer weather will often change the course of a day. If you can relax and let the professionals do their best work, you will have a great day.

Anticipation Reigns

Anticipation runs high on a wedding day… high enough that even the rain can’t dampen it by much. For Emily and James, the anticipation was enough to drive them out of hiding to watch their guests arriving. All of the formal photographs had been taken and they had been enjoying a glass of champagne and a little privacy… all that was left was to walk across the small space between the house and the hall where a lovely ceremony and dinner were waiting for them. James would finally get to see the cake he had designed and all of their friends and families were on hand to cheer them through their vows. The only VIP missing was their good dog, Davey. ;0)

Gray Gables was the perfect spot for this late season wedding. The party rolled from the great food into the kinetic dance floor and when the lights came up, the crowd went out into the damp with sparklers to light the way to the limo… this couple is a gas and the wedding was just perfect!

Anticipation

Anticipation was the name of the game on this sunny Saturday afternoon. Amos was waiting for his Shannon in a hallway at the top of the Indigo building. He stood a little straighter and tried not to fidget every time the elevator made a sound but he was so ready to see her! His face was changing from serious to sunny as his thoughts swirled… he didn’t say much and he didn’t pay much attention to anything else… just like a man in love probably ought to be.

As I stood with him in that hallway, I imagined her long ride up in the elevator, anticipating the way it must feel to see each other for the first time on their wedding day. What I know for certain is that the smiles began in earnest when she stepped into that hallway… smiles that stayed lit for most of the day. I think they have a long life ahead of them… more smiles than not. ;0)

I’m so glad that I get to share this kind of day with so many great people… it is a privilege in every sense of the word. It really is a fine sort of work I get to do!

Real and True

Erin and Rob were almost on their toes in anticipation… the first sight of each other was on one of the balconies at the Jupiter Hotel… up out of the friendly crowd. They had a chance to really connect before the aisle walk and before all of those other people needed any part of them.

True love is a rare find… it’s nice to see it go by.
