Engagement Photos = No rules

Engagement-at-the-Pittock-Jamie-Bosworth-Photographer

Engagement photos can happen anytime… the rules have become much more relaxed and I’m fine with that. These guys, Gary and Steven, jumped the date for legal same sex weddings in Oregon by getting married in Vancouver last Spring. We all went to the courthouse and did the less romantic version to get the wedding done. Now, at the end of October, they will throw a great party for their family and friends. What has been missing in all of this was a chance to take portraits of the two of them in any kind of relaxed and sweet fashion. At the beginning of July, we spent a couple of hours at the Pittock Mansion in an attempt to give them something to hold for the rest of their lives… pictures to frame and take their place on the mantle piece where the rest of their special photographs live…. something to say, look, we are truly a couple and this is a reminder for all time.

Some people will tell you that engagement photos have to happen when you get engaged but that just isn’t the case. Sweet portraits can happen before or after or anywhere in between. It just doesn’t matter. What matters is that I have two people in love and the chance to put that on paper at some point in the relationship. For me, I have had the pleasure to get to know two very nice people and now I get to cover their party in a couple of weeks… how cool is that?

Getting married? Come talk to me… I love my job!

City Lights

In our corner of paradise we get to work in soft vineyard light and magical beach light… all of those weddings have a really fine chance to shine. However, you can also count on just the right light in our downtown streets… it’s just a matter of experience and persuasion. I say it that way because I can see the light when it is ready but I have to make my couples understand that the time is now…. the window is limited.

I have a couple shopping me right now who have this dynamic day planned. The only problem I can see is that they haven’t planned any time for really good photographs. They see it in my portfolio and it excites them but they don’t have the time to do anything like it. Wouldn’t you want to have a little input from your wedding professional? Keep us in the loop as much as you can. Just saying.

If you are shopping for for a real wedding photographer, come talk to me… a good fit is worth a lot.

A Little Spin After Dinner

Destination weddings always get a little extra photography… seems like the least I can do for the extra cost. Since I prefer to arrive a day ahead, I like to spend a couple of hours at the rehearsal dinner getting used to the family and close friends. It also gives me a chance to scout a venue that is new to me and, of course it is a kind of insurance against travel problems… a little buffer just in case.
What’s really cool is to be there when the surprises happen. Lindy had a shiny red tandem bike delivered to Avio Vineyards to give to Kenrick… he was one big smile as they went for a ride in the soft light of the Sierra foothills.

It never hurts to ask about having a trusted professional photographer travel for you… it beats taking a chance.

Moonrise Over Chairs

The cocktail hour was rolling at my back when I stood on the veranda at Zenith Vineyards for a quiet minute… the air was October crisp on my face. A cool part of my job is to be responsible for bringing home the parts of the day that the lovers may not see… a chance to give them a little added dimension. I must confess, though, that I would have taken this just for myself in any case. Why not gather the pretty parts of any given day?
