Love rules at any age. All the sweeter to find it later in your life… all the more wonderful to find it in a best friend. These two, their friendship goes way back… you could tell by listening to the toasts from people they have known since school. I got a real sense of their younger selves that night. I believe that the inner person ages much differently than the outer parts and I think it takes a long time for some younger people to “get” that. What I see in most older couples is a much clearer sense of self and a true trust in each other.
Kat and Roger called me about two weeks before they were to be married… since they live in the Virgin Islands, there was a shifting set of plans and it finally settled in at the Lan Su Chinese Garden. Instead of using the bridge, where countless ceremonies take place, they chose the beautiful Scholar’s Courtyard for their intimate crowd. It was just right!
Love is sweet in front of my camera… come see me, ok?
Sometimes the dress is hanging on the edge of a cluttered closet… sometimes it’s still in the bag, like a surprise. This dress was hanging from the loft railing in the guest house. The breeze moved it some and the veil hung down behind. Liz and her girlfriends were busy in the getting ready part of the day… makeup and hair, flower questions and a last minute music list for her DJ. Every now and then, I noticed that she would stop and look up at this dress, this dream she was about to step into. This caterpillar-to-butterfly part of the day… this silk dream.
You may remember from a few posts ago that Liz was casting about at the last minute for a good make-up artist… someone she could be herself with. I sent her a few names but listed Katherine Ross as my favorite and available artist… they clicked and the end result was a fabulous look for this very real woman.
Once the dress was fastened and she had her boots pulled on, the woman looking back from the mirror was quiet and calm for a moment… ready to get married.
Liz turned to me during the portraits, later, and marveled at how much more at ease she was for the camera this time… she trusted the way she looked and it made all the difference in the world. Trust is a good thing. ;0)
I had the absolute pleasure of second shooting for Randy Kepple last Saturday… to start, it’s a compliment to be invited by a peer and a good friend. We have only shared three weddings but we have established a trust and a fine rhythm and it is something I enjoy. In this image, we were up on the sunset ridge above the party. I watched Juston watching his true love in front of Randy’s camera… he loves her beyond all measure and that is a good thing.
There are some fine and wonderful florists in our fair city but I am always drawn to the art of Francoise Weeks. She seems to have an infinite connection to her own wide universe and a capacity for the translation of it. If you can give her an idea or two about what you like, she can bring intricate miracles to the table. All it takes is a little time and some trust in her many talents.
These two arrangements are enhanced a bit by the dirt under the fingernails of the older and the band-aid of the younger… still, charm abounds! I love flower girls!
Let me know if I can help you find the vendors of your dreams, ok?
